Kristin Carter, 25, from Bellingham and Tahoma Khalsa(Club NW), 27, from Seattle were the top finishers at the 2012 Whidbey Island Marathon. Both winners ran faster than last year’s winning times and picked up $1000 checks for their efforts.
Carter, a Bellingham High School graduate, qualified for and ran in the 2012 US Olympic Trials Marathon that was held in January, when she ran a 2:45:27 at the 2011 California International Marathon. On Sunday Carter ran 3:01:31 and won by over 7 minutes. Elizabeth Abbey of Spokane and Melissa Cox of Portland rounded out the Top 3 spots and received $500 and $250 prizes for their 2nd and 3rd place finishes.
The men’s race was a lot closer then the women’s race, as only 7 seconds separated Khalsa from Steve Dekoker in a battle that only saw a winner surface in the last few minutes of the race. Their times were 2:40:15 and 2:40:22. Dekoker, also of Seattle, won $500 for his 2nd place finish and Douglas Rudeen ran 2:54:29 to secure the final cash prize of $250.
The Whidbey Island Half Marathon was won by Joseph Gray(Scott Sports/Club NW) in 1:09:25 and Kristi Houck in 1:25:00. Eric Garner of Woodinville and Rick Bogatay of Tacoma finished 2nd and 3rd in this year’s half marathon. On the women’s side, Nicole Calian of Seattle and Danika Evans of Tacoma, placed 2nd and 3rd. The half marathon also offered cash prizes for top finishers as 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in both the men’s and women’s race received $500, $250 and $125.
